One of the most common things I hear from people contemplating a healthier lifestyle change is : I just don’t have time to workout “. What you are really saying is “my health is NOT a priority ” ! Say that aloud. I try to be sympathetic because I know that we are all trying to figure out our lives, manage familes, make good choices, but..man, this is super annoying for me to hear . I am just as busy as the next person. I don’t have it any easier than you. I could sit here and tell you all of the unique things that make my life “hard”. I promise. The only difference is that I have made a conscious decision to be COMMITTED. I am committed to a healthier lifestyle and committed to working towards that daily. Even if I “fall off the wagon” , I get back on…because it’s a priority for me. It makes me feel 1000 times better when I take care of myself. I feel more confident and happier knowing I value my self worth enough to do something hard. You can too!!!
How do I have time to workout?? I don’t . I MAKE the time. Well, honestly, there’s a lot of days that I have given up sleep. You may not be in the same situation as me, but, for this time in my life, it’s what I do. I try to get up before my kids, stay awake when they are napping , go to the gym after they’re in bed, or take them with me to the track , etc. I have to plan ahead for the whole week usually…this day I can go before work, this day I have to go at night, etc. If you have a set work schedule, it might be easier. But, honestly, if you want to do it YOU WILL FIND A WAY!!
It doesn’t take a lot to get started ! It’s mostly mental !!!! It’s a commitment…putting your health as a priority. You can find 30 minutes a day or an hour 3x a week that you can set aside to work out. Almost everyone I know spends more time than that on emails, social media, watching useless TV or funny videos online …There’s been times that I only had 30 minutes at the gym…so I adjusted my training plan to do abs and arms (just an example) that day instead of legs , since my time was shorter. Put your phone down and focus- you’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish at the gym in 30 minutes. Having a plan BEFORE you get there also helps save time! If you’re working out at home, you can definitely find 30 minutes to do a bodyweight workout or cardio. Schedule it on your calendar if you have to!!!
The good news is that exercising is usually the easier part of a healthier lifestyle !! Changing your eating habits and relationship with food is MUCH harder. But, don’t despair!!!! You CANNNNN do it . It also takes some , you guessed it : commitment. Priorities. Setting this as a priority may seem hard at first, but, it actually can HELP. …it can help you to have a clear directions when faced with an unexpected decision…should I or should I not go to the drive through and get cookies? Ask yourself, is this furthering my commitment ? Is this helping my goal of putting my health as a priority right now? It could save 5 minutes , a couple dollars, and a few hundred calories by NOT stopping at the gas station and buying junk. Keep doing things like this and it WILL get easier. You will be surprised at how many changes you can make. Your health will become a priority and not something that you “don’t have time for”.
